THE ERIE COUNTY INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY AIDS POPULAR CULINARY COMPANY TO KEEP IT COOKING LOCALLY
Buffalo, NY - The Erie County Industrial Development Agency today approved a $7,000 mortgage recording tax abatement for The English Pork Pie Company. The tax break will assist the popular, award-winning specialty foods company, which had considered leaving New York State to cut costs.
Founded in 2008 by Damian and Vicky Parker, The English Pork Pie Company makes a variety of specialty pork and beef pies, as well as other English food favorites such as Cornish Pastries and Sausage Rolls. The British-born Parkers gradually expanded from a workforce of just two to 50, outgrowing a 6,000 square foot leased facility on Broadway in Cheektowaga. However, the owners couldn't afford to relocate to the much larger quarters they needed to meet current and future demand.
They were days away from moving their business to Youngstown, OH, when they found ideal space in a 37,000-square-foot plant at 1176 South Park Ave. in South Buffalo - the former Village Farms property at the former Republic Steel.
The ECIDA's $7,000 abatement will aid the Parkers in purchasing and renovating the facility, including installation of an automated pot pie production line. The new equipment will allow the company to double its workforce and expand sales to customers throughout the U.S. and beyond. The multi-phase project carries a price tag of $1.2 million.
The company is expected to seek additional funding through the ECIDA as the project moves forward, and is also working with Empire State Development and the City of Buffalo on financial support.
The company, which sources 85 percent of its ingredients from local vendors, has gained international recognition since it was named 'Best British Shop in America' and 'Best British Shop in the World' titles in 2010. Its products are sold to English-themed shops, tea rooms, restaurants, pubs and specialty food stores throughout the U.S. with 15 percent of its goods going to international customers.
The ECIDA board also approved $217,050 in sales and mortgage recording tax abatements for 100 South Elmwood, LLC. The $5.4 million residential project, led by Anthony Baynes and Kent Frey, saw conversion of the vacant Robertson Cataract Building to 26 loft-style apartments.
The ECIDA previously approved a $3 million lease/leaseback inducement for adaptive reuse project.
